The 2026/2027 Premier League season arrives this weekend with more than just new signings and tactical rivalries — it’s becoming a live testing ground for some of the most advanced AI innovations in world sport.

Recruitment Gets Smarter
Clubs are combining human scouting expertise with AI models that scan thousands of players globally, assessing not only raw performance data but also compatibility with a club’s style, tactical philosophy, and culture. Arsenal, for example, have invested heavily in AI-enhanced recruitment platforms to identify emerging prospects across Europe. Brighton & Hove Albion’s data-led scouting network is already famous for unearthing undervalued players, and AI now accelerates that process by integrating historical match footage, biometric data, and performance metrics into predictive models. These systems can flag talent months before rivals take notice, reducing both cost and risk in the transfer market.
Real-Time Data, Human Tactical Decisions
Artificial intelligence is accelerating how quickly football analysts can understand what is happening during a match—but it is not replacing the manager on the touchline.
Optical tracking systems create a near-real-time digital representation of every player and the ball. AI can then translate billions of positional data points into recognisable football concepts such as pressing, pressure, overlapping runs, passing options and the space available between defensive lines.
According to Genius Sports, tracking data can now be delivered to Premier League clubs with less than a second of delay. Analysts can use dashboards and customised alerts to monitor particular patterns during a match. The technology can also identify relevant moments and automatically assemble video clips, allowing coaching teams to review important tactical problems at half-time much faster than was previously possible.
Research into AI-generated tactical advice is also moving closer to practical club use. TacticAI was originally developed by Google DeepMind in collaboration with Liverpool FC, focusing on the analysis and redesign of corner-kick routines. It can predict likely receivers, estimate whether a routine will produce a shot and suggest alternative player positions. In expert testing, its suggested setups were preferred to existing examples 90 per cent of the time.
In June 2026, Google announced that TacticAI was being expanded through collaborations with Brazilian club Palmeiras and the Brazilian Football Confederation. Google DeepMind says the evolved system can simulate field scenarios and predict open-play dynamics up to eight seconds ahead. Palmeiras’ data-science team can also reposition players through an interactive interface to examine how alternative defensive setups might affect the movement of both teams.
This represents an important step beyond the original corner-kick research. However, Google’s announcement does not confirm that Palmeiras is using TacticAI to direct coaches during competitive matches. It is therefore more accurate to describe live tactical deployment as emerging rather than established.
There is also limited public evidence that Premier League clubs routinely use AI to simulate substitutions or formation changes during matches and then instruct managers what to do. The clearer current use is AI-assisted decision support: technology can surface patterns, measure space and prepare evidence more quickly, while coaches and analysts interpret that information within the wider context of the match.
AI is shortening the journey from an event happening to a human understanding it. The tactical decision remains human—but the evidence available to support that decision is becoming faster, richer and increasingly predictive.
Predictive Health and Injury Prevention
Wearable sensors, high-speed cameras, and AI-driven load management systems can now detect micro-patterns in movement or physiological stress that often precede injuries. Brentford, known for their evidence-based sports science, combine these insights with AI models to fine-tune individual training programmes. This season, predictive pitch condition analysis — monitoring grass quality, moisture, and wear patterns — will be more widely integrated with player health data, giving sports science teams a complete environmental and physical profile before, during, and after games. The goal: fewer injuries, better recovery times, and sustained peak performance.
Semi-Automated Offside Technology: From Rollout to Refinement
Semi-Automated Offside Technology, commonly known as SAOT, is now an established part of Premier League officiating. After being introduced during the closing stages of 2024/25, the system completed its first full Premier League season in 2025/26.
SAOT uses computer-vision cameras installed around each Premier League stadium to track the movement of the players and ball. The resulting data allows the GeniusIQ platform to create a detailed three-dimensional representation of the action, identify the moment the ball was played and generate a virtual offside line.
Despite its name, the system does not make the final decision independently. It provides the tracking data and visualisation, which VAR officials must validate before communicating the outcome to the referee. This combination of automated analysis and human oversight is intended to make factual offside decisions faster and more consistent.
For 2026/27, the Premier League is focusing on improving how SAOT is used, particularly to reduce VAR delays and provide a clearer experience for supporters. The technology itself is no longer the new arrival; the challenge now is making it work more efficiently while retaining human responsibility for the final decision.

Fan Experience Becomes More Personal and Conversational
For supporters, one of the most visible uses of artificial intelligence is the Premier League Companion, powered by Microsoft Copilot and available through the League’s official website and app.
The Companion allows fans to ask conversational questions about clubs, players, fixtures and Premier League history. It uses official statistics, news, more than 300,000 articles and thousands of videos to help people explore over 30 seasons of football without having to search through the archive manually.
Fans can use it to find memorable matches, receive updates about their favourite clubs and players, or summarise recent Premier League stories. When connected to a myPremierLeague account, the experience can also be personalised around the teams and subjects that matter most to the individual supporter.
Adobe’s technology adds another layer of personalisation. Its tools can help the Premier League tailor news alerts and digital experiences according to a supporter’s interests and consent settings, while Adobe Express and Firefly provide creative features for producing and sharing Premier League-themed content.
These developments show how AI can make an enormous collection of information easier to explore. However, conversational AI can still produce incomplete or inaccurate answers, particularly when dealing with rapidly changing information. The Premier League itself warns users that Companion responses are not guaranteed to be accurate, complete or fully up to date.
The most effective fan experience therefore combines convenient AI assistance with official sources, responsible use of personal data and an understanding that important information should still be verified.
Fantasy Football and AI Decision Support
For the 2026/27 season, artificial intelligence has moved directly into the official Fantasy Premier League experience through the Fantasy Premier League Companion, powered by Microsoft Copilot.
Built using Microsoft Foundry, Azure OpenAI, ChatGPT 5.4 and official Premier League data, the Companion can answer questions, explain the rules and help managers compare possible transfer targets using statistics such as expected goals. It can also take account of a manager’s existing squad, available budget and player availability, creating a more personalised experience.
Importantly, the Companion is designed to support decisions rather than make them. It presents a range of options instead of selecting one supposedly perfect answer, does not provide predicted points and will not manage someone’s team automatically.
That distinction matters beyond fantasy football. AI is often most useful when it makes trusted information easier to find, compare and understand—while leaving the final decision, and the consequences of it, with the human user.
The Current Tech Landscape
The Premier League’s technology landscape in 2026/27 is not based on one central AI system. It consists of several connected layers, each serving a different purpose.
At match level, computer-vision cameras capture detailed positional information about every player and the ball. Genius Sports’ mesh-tracking technology converts this footage into rich data that can support semi-automated offside decisions, broadcast graphics, performance analysis and new ways of visualising matches.
Clubs can combine league-provided tracking and event data with their own video analysis, GPS information, wearable-sensor data and scouting systems. These tools help analysts examine movement, workload, opposition patterns and player performance. However, the exact systems used by individual clubs are often confidential, and it should not be assumed that every analytical tool is powered by AI or that algorithms are making live tactical decisions for coaches.
The fan-facing layer is becoming increasingly generative and conversational. The Premier League Companion helps supporters explore official statistics, news and archive content, while the Fantasy Premier League Companion provides personalised information and decision support. Adobe’s technology adds personalised communications and creative tools for fans.
Beneath these services sits the League’s expanding cloud and data infrastructure. Its partnership with Microsoft includes moving core systems to Microsoft Azure and using AI across digital platforms, broadcast analysis and internal operations.
It is important to distinguish artificial intelligence from the wider technology surrounding it. Player tracking, databases, dashboards and video systems are not automatically AI. Artificial intelligence becomes involved when technologies such as computer vision, machine learning or generative models are used to interpret data, identify patterns, generate content or support decisions.
The result is a connected ecosystem in which AI can provide faster analysis and easier access to information—but players, coaches, analysts and officials remain responsible for the decisions that affect the game.

Why the Premier League Leads the World for AI
The Premier League’s position as a technology leader does not depend on one experimental tool. Its strength comes from combining league-wide data infrastructure, artificial intelligence, computer vision and cloud services across officiating, broadcasting, digital products and fan engagement.

Nevertheless, the League’s combination of investment, trusted data and practical deployment places it among the leading adopters of artificial intelligence in world sport.
